Brevard County is home to the Space Coast, Beaches, Schools—and high tech. Over 70 miles long, Brevard County has a range of communities, from semi-rural Mims / Scottsmoor at the north end to the populous new subdivisions at the south end in Palm Bay. In between are Kennedy Space Center, Port Canaveral (second largest vacation cruise port in Florida), and cities such as Melbourne and Viera, which is fast replacing Titusville as the seat of government. The beautiful Indian River Lagoon is favored for fishing, sailing, and admiring, and the Atlantic shore is home to large, famous beaches, such as Cocoa Beach, with its pier and surf shops (think Ron Jon), as well as many quieter pocket beaches and the pristine national seashore of Playa Linda, which shares space on Merritt Island with the shuttle launches. Numerous high tech industries associated with space and other government work, such as Harris and Grumman, have a significant presence. The community college coordinates programs with University of Central Florida, and the Florida Institute of Technology is highly regarded, as is the Brevard public school system.
